Chimney Care

chimneyAccording to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), approximately 26,000 fires annually can be attributed to fireplaces and chimneys resulting in property losses of more than $120 million and 10 deaths. The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that homeowners regularly have their chimneys checked and cleaned by a chimney cleaning professional in order to reduce the possibility of a chimney fire.

Tips for Fire prevention:

  • Only Burn dry wood. Damp/moist wood increases creosote buildup in your chimney.
  • Keep combustible materials away from your stove and chimney connector.
  • Ensure that there aren’t any cracks in the brick or masonry because heat can radiate from the chimney structure and cause a fire

Carbon Monoxide is also a very real threat to your home in the case of chimney blockages. Outside of fire prevention, chimney care aims to mitigate the risk of this exposure which can be caused by backflow of the smoke from an inefficient chimney system.

Chimney Inspection:

Don't risk waiting for this to happen before having an inspection done. The (National Fire Protection Association) NFPA 211 Standard states that every chimney and venting system – whether it’s used or not – should be professionally inspected every single year.

Inspections are incredibly valuable to the effort of mitigating Fire hazard risks. Leaving cracks, damages, deterioration, and fractures unchecked can put your family at risk.

Level 1

When do you need a level 1 chimney inspection? If your appliance or venting system has not changed and you plan to use your system as you have in the past, then a level 1 inspection is a minimum requirement. A level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service, under the same conditions, and with the continued use of the same appliance

Level 2

When do you need a level 2 chimney inspection? A level 2 inspection is required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change in the fuel type (for example, you’re switching from woodburning to gas), changes to the shape or material of the flue (i.e. relining), or the replacement or addition of an appliance of a dissimilar type, input, rating, or efficiency. Additionally, a level 2 inspection is required upon the sale or transfer of a property, or after an operation malfunction or external event that is likely to have caused damage to the chimney. Building fires, chimney fires, earthquakes, as well as weather events are all indicators that this level of inspection is warranted.

Level 3

When do you need a level 3 chimney inspection? When a level 1 or level 2 inspection suggests a hidden and serious hazard, and the evaluation cannot be performed without special tools to access concealed areas of the chimney or flue, a level 3 inspection is recommended.

Indicators that an interior chimney problem may exist include loose bricks, broken flue tiles, and missing or cracked chimney caps/crowns. External problems that may seem like aging may also be a problem that a trained chimney sweep can identify, including loose bricks, brick or clay pieces in your fireplace, white staining on the exterior brick surface, or even a firebox that is too close to the fireplace walls.

Chimney Cleaning:

Chimneys are not made to sustain fires, ONLY the smoke byproducts caused by a fire. However, Creosote is a very flammable substance that can stick to the flue liner on the interior of your chimney. This layer gets more dangerous the thicker it gets, hence why regularly scheduled cleanings/sweepings and inspections are ESSENTIAL. Blockages can also occur because of animals and bird nests being created in the spring and summer, when your chimney may not be in use as often. This leads to a risk of carbon monoxide accumulating in your home and air quality greatly diminishing.

Safe House specializes in handling all of these issues with great care and diligence to protect your home, WE GOT YOUR BACK! The sweep includes removing built-up soot, creosote, and other byproducts of the fire from the chimney liner, smoke chamber, firebox, and damper.

❝The company responded within 15 minutes after I opened the progect, and have arrived within 1 hour after, did a great job, and were done in about 2 hours. One thing to remember is to keep one filter installed at the blower compartment. The technicians will need that filter to trap the debris. ❞
